Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

Commentary

Bataran – (boastfully), batara means “to strut, to give one’s self airs, to behave with boastfulness, bragging by someone after getting any good thing and misusing it”.

Ri-‘aaa-‘a – (show, to be seen of people, ostentation), it means “to work in such a way that the people consider it good, whereas really it is nothing”, that is to say; the individual, who commit so, either does not consider it good himself; or that is not valuable near him.

Jaarun – (protector), this word is used at many places in Arabic language, for example; a neighbor, that individual; who provides shelter, a friend, a supporter and a protector. Here it has been used for the last meaning.

It has been caused to understand in this verse that there is another behavior in the war which was adopted by the idolaters of Makkah. After describing about this behavior, God Almighty commanded that you should not do so.

It is commanded that the infidels of Makkah came forth to fight against you boastfully, with pomp and show, beating kettledrums and using musical instruments; being proud and haughty. The Devil was encouraging them and saying: Fear not anyone. I am your protector. None of the human beings can overcome you today.

The Army of the disbelievers was brought out by Abu Jahal. In the way, any individual said to him: That caravan has gone out of the range of Muslims, to which; you are going to save. You must go back to your home now. Abu Jahal said: We shall celebrate a festival after reaching the place of Badr for three days. He did not know that his berating deeds have been pushing him towards the mouth of his death and destruction place of his Army.
